Lab-Grown Diamond vs Moissanite — What's the Difference?
Direct answer
They are different materials, not versions of the same thing. A lab-grown diamond is real diamond — the same crystal structure and hardness as a mined one, grown in a chamber instead of the earth. Moissanite is silicon carbide: a hard, bright, lab-created gem, but not diamond, with a different look and its own grading. Glass and cubic zirconia are soft imitations below both.
Where the two actually differ
Start with what each thing is. Diamond — mined or lab-grown — is carbon in a crystal lattice, graded on the 4Cs with a real grading report. Moissanite is silicon carbide, a lab-created gem that is genuinely hard and genuinely bright, but it is a different material: different optical behavior, and graded as moissanite rather than as a diamond. Glass and cubic zirconia sit below both — soft imitations that scratch and dull in daily wear.
The honest reason the two get compared is that both can put a bright, near-colorless stone on a ring for eye-visible money. Moissanite tends to show more rainbow-like fire; a lab-grown diamond behaves optically like any other diamond. On price, moissanite is usually the cheaper option by a wide margin — a lab-grown diamond costs less than a mined one at the same grade, but more than moissanite.
For a custom piece, the choice is about what you want the stone to be — and about honest labeling. If you want a real diamond at a lower price than mined, that is lab-grown. If a hard, bright, affordable stone is the goal and it does not have to be diamond, moissanite is a legitimate route — tell us at the quote stage what you have in mind and we will confirm what is available for your design. Either way, the stone's identity should be documented, never assumed: a grading report and a laser inscription are what settle it.

Is moissanite a fake diamond?+
It is not a fake — it is a different gem that makes no claim to be diamond. The problem only starts when it is sold to you as one. A lab-grown diamond is real diamond; moissanite is a diamond alternative.
Can you tell moissanite from a lab-grown diamond by eye?+
Not reliably — which is why testing and paperwork exist. A jeweler's tester reads it in seconds, and a diamond carries a grading report and a laser inscription that moissanite does not have.
Is glass the same as either?+
No. Glass and cubic zirconia are soft costume-jewelry imitations with no diamond grading. Lab-grown diamond is diamond; moissanite is a hard engineered gem; glass is neither.
