Can a Jewelry Manufacturer Create CAD From My Design?

Quick answer

Yes. You can start from a sketch, photo, reference image, an existing design or a rough concept — we build it into a production-ready CAD model first. That model locks in the dimensions, geometry, stone settings and engraving before anything is sampled or cast, so what you approve is exactly what we make.

What a jewelry CAD actually defines

A jewelry CAD is not a picture. It is the engineering record of a piece — the set of decisions that make the design manufacturable. A CAD model defines, at minimum:

  • Dimensions — ring size, chain length, pendant drop, in millimeters, not in impression
  • Geometry — the actual 3D surfaces that will be printed in wax or resin and cast
  • Stone settings — seat depth, claw count and position, so a stone is held, not glued
  • Structure — wall thickness and connection points that survive casting and daily wear
  • Engraving and detailing — what is cut into the metal, and at what depth

How your idea becomes a CAD model

  1. 1

    Read your input

A sketch, photo, reference image or existing piece is reviewed for what must stay and what can flex before the model is opened.

  2. 2

    Rebuild in 3D

The design is modeled at real wear dimensions, with manufacturability baked in — sections thick enough to cast, stones held by real settings.

  3. 3

    Read-back for approval

You review front, side and top views and request changes inside the approved scope. Revisions here cost minutes in software, not a new casting.

  4. 4

    Approved CAD → sample

The approved model is the reference for the physical sample and, later, production. Nothing is cast until you approve it.

Real project example

From an AI concept to a castable pendant

A real project, start to finish: the customer sent an AI pendant concept, we reviewed it for manufacturability, rebuilt it as production CAD, revised it to v2 together with the customer, and re-approved it before casting.

The manufacturing problem: The AI render showed a heavy rounded bezel that would swallow a step-cut stone, and a bail fused into the top rail. We thinned the bezel to a clean semi-bezel that lets light into the stone's corners, opened the back so it hangs light instead of as a solid gold drop, and rebuilt the bail as its own loop that keeps the pendant square on the chain, then re-approved the modified CAD (v2) before wax carving.

CAD design questions, answered

Do I need an existing CAD file to start?+

No. You do not necessarily need an existing CAD file to start a custom jewelry project. A project can begin with a sketch, photo, reference image, existing jewelry sample, technical drawing, or a basic design concept.

Can you create jewelry CAD from a sketch or photo?+

Yes. A jewelry sketch or photo can be used as the starting point for CAD development. The input is reviewed for proportions, dimensions, construction and production requirements before the 3D model is developed.

Can the CAD be revised before production?+

Yes. CAD can be revised during the design-development process when changes are needed to dimensions, proportions, stone placement, engraving, structure or other design details.

Why do I need to approve the CAD before sampling?+

CAD approval creates a clear design reference before a physical sample is made. It helps both you and the manufacturer confirm the intended shape, dimensions, details and construction before moving to the next stage.
