Is It Cheaper to Make Custom Jewelry in China?

Direct answer

Often, but not automatically. A factory that is the manufacturer — not a reseller with a markup — can price closer to real metal, stone and labor cost, and it avoids the retail and brand layers stacked on top in your home market. The genuine savings come from cutting those layers and from in-house foundry and bench work, not from a blanket discount; complex, hand-built or fully-set pieces still cost what that work costs anywhere.

Where a China factory actually saves you money — and where it doesn't

The honest reason direct-from-factory pricing can land lower is structural. A retail price is manufacturing cost plus every layer above it — importer, brand, showroom, margin. Buying from the workshop that melts, casts, sets and polishes removes most of that stack, and you pay nearer what the piece costs to make. Add materials bought at source and integrated production under one roof, and a simple custom piece in silver or 14k gold frequently comes in below an equivalent off-the-shelf item at home.

What does not change with geography is the physics of cost. Gold is gold at the gram price. A hand-built shank bills by the hour, a full pavé wrap by the stone count — those do not get cheaper because the bench is in a different country. So a heavily-set or entirely hand-fabricated piece can cost as much, or more, than a mass-produced lookalike. The saving is about where the money goes, not a magic rate.

The number also has to survive the order terms. A low quote on an ex-works or FOB basis may leave import duty and shipping to you, while a delivered quote folds them in — the comparison only means something on the same basis, which is why ours names the shipping terms and what is included up front. We will not post a headline 'China is 80% cheaper' figure: the real delta depends on the specific piece and current metal prices, and that is a per-project quote, not a slogan.

More questions on this

Is China jewelry always the cheapest option?+

No. You skip the retail layer, but metal, stone count and hand labor cost what they cost anywhere. Simple cast pieces save most; complex hand-built pieces may not.

What makes a China factory price lower?+

Buying from the actual manufacturer removes importer, brand and showroom margins, and materials are bought at source — the savings are structural, not a discount.

Will shipping and duty erase the savings?+

Only if they are hidden. A quote on a named basis (EXW/FOB vs delivered) states who pays freight and duty up front, so you compare real landed cost, not a headline price.
